Getting started: Essential tools for western calligraphy

Western calligraphy is an art form that combines precision and creativity. To begin, you’ll need the right tools:

  • Nibs: Start with a versatile pointed nib like the *Nikko G* or *Brause EF66*.

  • Holder: Oblique holders for scripts like Copperplate; straight holders for Italic or Gothic.

  • Ink: High-quality, non-clogging ink (e.g., *Walnut Ink*, *Sumi* or *Higgins Eternal*).

  • Paper: Smooth, bleed-resistant paper (e.g., *Rhodia* or *Canson Marker Pad*).

  • Guidelines: Print or draw slant and baseline guides for consistency.

Pro Tip: Clean the nibs with rubbing alcohol before using them to remove factory oil!
